AMSG2 What Is Asbestos?

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral mined from rock and made up of many small fibres. Asbestos is extremely strong and was widely used in products because of its high resistance to fire and chemicals and effectiveness as an insulator.

The use and manufacture of asbestos is now banned in Australia.

Due to its durability, asbestos was used in a variety of different ways. Some common examples include:

  * Asbestos Cement Sheets
  * Tilux/Duraflex Sheets (bathrooms and kitchens)
  * Asbestos cement corrugated roof sheeting (often called “Super Six” sheeting)
  * Asbestos cement guttering, drains & pipes.
  * Asbestos insulation – pipes & electrical wires
  * Asbestos brake pads & linings, and clutch pads.

Preventing Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos products in homes and buildings can be a problem if disturbed or handled. People should be careful not to damage or remove asbestos without first seeking professional advice.

If a product is not labeled as an asbestos product, then the only way to be certain is through laboratory analysis. If you aren’t sure if it contains asbestos, treat the product as if it is asbestos and seek professional assistance before undertaking any work.
